St. Martin de Porres by Richard Cardinal Cushing traces the life and works of Martin De Porres Velázquez from the day of his canonization on May 6, 1962 to his birth on December 9, 1579. The day of his canonization was a great one. People came from around the world to Rome to witness the undertaking. The writer tells a biography of De Porres’ exceptional hardship, because of his mix-race, he writes that Ana Velázquez, an African, and Don Juan de Porres, a Spaniard, were married, but lived separately. As De Porres grew up in a world divided and segregated by religion and wealth status, the author defines how he worked through it all with humility and deep faith. The book written in 1962 provides the newest historic updates on De Porres’ work in Lima, Peru among poor whites, blacks, Indians and mestizos of its ghettos. De Porres worked to organize a farm, raised a substantial amount of funds from donors to do his social work, and he served the people regardless of race and cared for animals. The volume contains black and white photos and artworks and the Novena to Martin De Porres; they provide in English nine annotations with prayers. This is a noteworthy read for a Saint for today’s issues.
